Turn learning about AI and sustainability into practical action

The SUSTaiN AI for Sustainability Hackathon Guide is a practical resource for educators, trainers and VET institutions who want to organise engaging, challenge-based learning activities where learners use AI to explore real sustainability problems. It is designed to be accessible even for educators and learners with limited previous experience of AI or hackathons.

The guide connects directly with the SUSTaiN learning modules and shows how learners can apply their knowledge to challenges in agriculture, transport, energy and water management. Rather than focusing on coding or advanced technical skills, the approach emphasises problem-solving, teamwork, creativity and the practical use of AI to develop more sustainable solutions.

Who is the guide for?

The guide is primarily aimed at VET educators, trainers and institutions working with learners at EQF levels 4 to 6. It can also support collaboration with companies, municipalities and other stakeholders who wish to contribute real-world challenges, mentoring or feedback.

What will you find in the guide?

The guide takes you through the whole process; from designing a relevant sustainability challenge and preparing participants to running the hackathon, mentoring teams, evaluating outcomes and following up afterwards. It also addresses ethical and responsible use of AI and includes practical, ready-to-use planning, delivery and evaluation templates that educators can adapt to their own learners, sector and available time.

No previous hackathon experience is required. Activities can range from a short 1 to 2 hour classroom session to a half-day, full-day or multi-day event, making the approach flexible enough to fit different VET settings.

Explore the guide and turn AI and sustainability knowledge into learning by doing.
